Proposed installation design for Playa Vista Public Library
Finalist public art proposal designed for the Playa Vista Public Library
Site-specific installation of four painted murals with text and pictographic imagery created with poet Marcella Durand
Site: A public library located in Playa Vista, CA
Designed: 2008
Commissioned by: Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) for the Library Department
These proposed artworks are for a site-specific installation consisting of four painted murals with text and pictographic imagery. The artwork connects the wonders of the library’s collection with its architecture and surroundings – the Ballona wetlands, the ocean, Lincoln and Jefferson Boulevards and LAX. The artwork features metaphors of water, travel and language, specifically, the feeling of going deep into a book and losing oneself, traveling through words, ideas and the imagination. It links reading’s journey through the landscape of the mind with Playa Vista’s urban wetlands setting and history.
