Multipurpose Room, 18ft - 20ft x 43 ft
Public art commission for the Sherman Oaks/East Valley Adult Center
Four interior murals and poetic walkway tiles; tiles created with poet Marcella Durand
Site: A community senior center located in a park, Sherman Oaks, CA
Completed: December 2010
Commissioned by: Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Department of Recreation and Parks
Art Fabricators: Knack Studios (tiles) and Stacie Jaye Meyer (murals)
Building Architects: Rios Clementi Hale Studios
The artwork consists of four painted murals and a poetic text embedded in a concrete walkway.
The interior painted murals are placed in areas with high public use, and the text, wrought in
waterjet cut stainless steel, is encountered as visitors walk along the outdoor path through the
complex and gardens. The artwork is inspired by the site as a place for seniors and other
community members to gather in a natural setting, the history of Sherman Oaks as a farming
community, the citrus groves that were planted there, and a sense of wonder, discovery, and joy
in community that is a foundation of the senior center’s purpose.
